My wife and I just closed on a business a few days ago. We are now the proud owners of a used children's store. They are an established business of about 4 or 5 years, and they just want to have more time for family, so they sold it. We're both pretty excited, though it will be a lot of work, but we have some great friends who are willing to help out here and there.
We buy and sell used children's clothing, toys, equipment, furniture, and mostly everything else. It's a great business to get into at this point in time with the economy how they are. People bring in their used stuff, and if it's in good condition and we think it will sell, we offer them cash or store credit.
It's a small place, and we've got some big ideas brainstorming. The store really needs to be reorganized, so once the previous owners are finished going over all the training and everything, we've got a friend who does retail design that will come in and help us reorganize everything to the best advantage. Plus I've now got another design project to "rock the website" as Dan Berg put it. And we're most likely going to be doing some cool things with social networking and new media. They haven't done much branding or huge amounts of marketing either (I'd never heard of it until my father-in-law told us about the possibility of buying it).
The website is http://clothestree.net if you were interested. There's not much there right now, but I'm definitely working on a redesign. Hopefully this works out to be something that continues to grow. I think getting a couple of young people in as the owners will help keep things "hip" and up-to-date.

Congrats, guys. A business of your own is a great way to start out in life. No bosses, Can't get fired. If you work hard and market, it should be great. Of course you know the downside, insurance, long hours, taxes and accounting… but that's all part of it. Just hope it doesn't interfere too much with the podcast. Good luck!

Thanks. We're looking forward to it. The good thing at this point is the fact that we both are still employed at other places so we're still making money there and we're getting health insurance. This is sort of a little bit of extra money to save, until the business starts growing and we're making enough to stop our current jobs. And her step-mom is going to be taking care of all the taxes and accounting stuff so we don't have to worry about that. As we see it, it's better to own a business earlier on so that it has more time to grow with us making the profits, and we still have the energy for it. Plus when it grows bigger and better and we sell it for millions of dollars, we won't be too old to enjoy it
It shouldn't interfere too much, especially if we start releasing episodes every two weeks instead of every week.

oooh, that reminds me, Do I have to wait TWO weeks for warped part deux?
Sounds like a great deal. And I tried really really hard to not make a joke about a "used childrens store" but you would have Madonna and Angelie Jolie breaking down your door. Hahah.
Sounds like you stumbled into a great opportunity. Hope it works out for ya. And having the family involved will take the stress off, unlike if you yourself just decided to buy/start a store all by yourself. Now, next step is have a kid or two so you know what your clientele needs.
Call it market research. LOL

haha, yeah I realized it wasn't worded perfectly, but didn't feel like changing it. Warped Tour second half will be out this week. We decided we didn't want to wait too long after the actual show date to release everything (since we waited two weeks to release part one).
We've decided to wait on kids for now. Just got too much going right now, kids would complicate juggling the business as well as our full-time jobs, dogs, etc. and have no time for any vacation time. At some point we will, but for now we've got too much going on I think.

smart move. Too many young couples have kids too young. Gotta get the finances secure, etc, first. Most of my friends had kids too young, and though they did great, the missed a LOT of their young adulthood , too, and had to sacrifice too much too early. Enjoy youth. It only happens once.
